SingleOlivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan share their first song together on a remix of "expectations", with a music video that puts them on a retro game show. The song comes from Rodrigo's third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. It is the first time Roan has guested on another artist's song, and her first new music of 2026. Dan Nigro, who produced the album and has worked for years with both singers, produced this version too, so the remix comes from the same studio team that built the album.
The singer's own opening verse is unchanged, and so is the blaring, '80s-style dance-pop underneath it. The change comes in the second verse, which now belongs to Roan and tells of a woman she takes to a concert, front row, who then stops answering. "She said she'd call me later / That was three weeks ago / Classic L.A. behavior," she sings, putting a sapphic twist on a song about men who disappoint. She also sings one of the choruses, joins Rodrigo on the hook, and belts the closing ad-libs, which turns a solo complaint into a duet between two women comparing notes on the same bad luck.
Bardia Zeinali directed the clip as a parody of a retro television quiz called The Big Expectations Show, hosted with deadpan relish by David Byrne. Byrne opens by asking three versions of Rodrigo, each in a different outfit, how they got there, and the sets borrow from retro game shows, all flipping panels and spinning wheels. Roan arrives halfway through for a Family Feud-style face-off and clears the board with her own tale of romantic disappointment. Nigro turns up at the end, clutching a phone the size of a brick.
Their friendship has deep roots. Roan opened shows on Rodrigo's Sour and Guts tours, and on August 29 she played the first Daisy Chain Fields, the women-led festival Rodrigo staged at Great Park in Irvine, California, which raised $20 million for ten nonprofits serving women and girls, with half of it matched by philanthropist Melinda French Gates. The remix leaked before it was confirmed, when a German retailer briefly put the single on sale. An Instagram story then carried a clip of a woman's voice teasing that remixes were now on the menu, and fans suspected who it was. They guessed right, and that voice is the first thing heard on the finished track.
The remix moved fast. On the Official Singles Chart, "expectations" jumped from No. 35 to No. 3, behind only Jamie Miller's "Babydoll" and Tate McRae's "Housewife". For a song about people who make promises and never deliver, that is a neat bit of irony, because this one did exactly what fans hoped it would. Rodrigo got her duet, fans got the answer to that voice in the Instagram clip, and the only one left disappointed is the woman in Roan's verse who never called back.
