RAYE Announces One-Night Orchestral Show at Royal Albert Hall

RAYE will return to London's Royal Albert Hall on October 23 to perform her second album in full. The one-night concert, This Symphony May Contain Hope., will feature her band, the Heritage Orchestra and Flames Collective choir. Both ensembles were part of her first symphonic performance at the venue in 2023. That show reworked songs from her earlier recordings, while the new date is devoted entirely to her latest album. Tickets go on sale October 15.

This Music May Contain Hope. arrived in March and follows a four-season structure, moving from heartbreak towards hope. RAYE told Apple Music she wanted to write songs listeners could turn to during difficult times. The record moves between jazz, soul and pop, with orchestral writing already part of its sound. "Click Clack Symphony.", featuring Hans Zimmer, grew from a rough demo she sent him into a song she has described as "unapologetically cinematic." The album reached No. 1 in the UK, a first for RAYE.

The concert announcement came with an Abbey Road Studios performance of "I Will Overcome." featuring the London Symphony Orchestra. Speaking to ELLE, RAYE called the song "big and dramatic" and pointed to a lyric about not being okay now but believing she will get through it. The lyric doesn't claim things are better already. It holds on to the possibility that they will be. On the new recording, she sings those words with a full orchestra behind her.

Her 2023 Royal Albert Hall performance was released as a concert film and live album. The film later received a Grammy nomination for Best Music Film, and she brought the same symphonic production to The O2 the following year. RAYE told the Recording Academy that she enjoyed changing arrangements onstage, sometimes extending an introduction or taking the music somewhere different from the studio version. That freedom onstage stood in contrast to her earlier battles over what she could release.

By the time My 21st Century Blues arrived, RAYE had spent years writing for other artists, including Beyoncé and Charli XCX, while releasing EPs and dance-pop singles herself. She has said she wanted to make R&B but had little creative control at her record label, Polydor. In 2021, she publicly complained that she still hadn't been allowed to release an album, then left the company. As an independent artist, she could finally put jazz and soul alongside the R&B and pop in her own music.

"Escapism.", her collaboration with 070 Shake, was one of the first songs to show how different her independent work could be. It follows someone trying to numb the pain of a breakup through drinking and nights out, far from the lighter dance singles associated with her earlier career. The single topped the UK chart before her first album came out. Her earlier Royal Albert Hall concert put new arrangements around songs that listeners already knew. This time, the orchestral sound is part of the new recordings themselves, rather than something added only for the stage.
